What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Post: A Branding Photographer’s Guide for Vermont Small Businesses

If you’re a small business owner in Vermont staring at a blinking cursor, wondering what the heck to post today, you’re not alone.

Maybe you’re:

  • Reposting that same headshot from 2015 the fifth time

  • Never showing your beautifulface because you don’t like how it shows up in iPhone selfies (and lbh, thats not professional)

  • Avoiding your Instagram altogether because it just feels like too much + you hate showing your face.

As a branding photographer based in beautiful Vermont, I work with creative, purpose-driven female entrepreneurs who are amazing at what they do—but sometimes struggle to show up visually in a way that feels authentic, polished, and aligned with their brand.

I really want to dig into this super common pain point—**“I never know what to post”—**and talk about how investing in brand photography can solve that in a real, highly sustainable (these assets on keep on giving long after you've used and paid for them), and a joy-filled way.

Why You Don’t Know What to Post (It’s Not You—It’s Your Content System)

You might be thinking, “I just need to try harder and I'll get it,” or “I’m not creative enough for for social media.”

But here’s the straight truth: if you don’t have an image photo/video/content library full of on-brand images and videos, you’re not set up for success.

Posting gets hard when:

  • You don’t have current photos of you, your products, your staff, your new location

  • You’re trying to DIY everything with random phone snaps or stock images- that means Canva, too! (and hint: everyone can tell you're using stock images... and somehow that comes across as inauthentic and regularly lacks consistency throughout websites)

  • You’re not sure what kind of content actually connects with your ideal clients and how to connect to them

That’s where intentional branding photography comes in. And listen. You do what you do best. And brand photographers do what they do best. And they're surrounded by marketing and marketers, so we have a pretty good idea about how to market your business to your dream client.

What Is Branding Photography (and How Is It Different from Headshots)?

Think about the headshots you see on LinkedIn. Those are classic headshots. Branding photography is wayyyy different from a standard headshot. It's a lifestyle photography session that helps to show who you are, what you do, how you do it, and what it feels like to work with you.  This is the big one. We want to show your clients what it feels to work with you, so we can creat that emotion within them just by looking at your photos.

This could mean:

  • BTS  of your creative process (clients want to see how it will be to work with you and this helps ease any doubts)

  • Lifestyle shots of you in your element (THIS IS IT!)

  • Flat lays of your tools, products, or workspaces (A favorite for sure.  These are fun, creative, and tell a beautiful story!)

  • Client interactions + mock setups (grab some friends for this one and let's HAVE SOME FUN!)

  • Seasonal content that speaks to your brand vibe (this is super important for outdoor companies, farms + nurseries, and coaches)

These kinds of images not only build trust—they give you weeks or months of usable content.  The best part of branding sessions (and a secret of marketing) is that you can reuse and recycle your content.  Make it funny, make it educational, make it entertaining all while telling your story- your natural personality will come out in these photos and then translate so organically into your marketing posts.

How Branding Photography Solves the “What Do I Post?” Problem

When we work together, I help you craft a highly effective and intentional photo shoot around the images and content you actually need—not just the content that looks nice or what you saw someone do that one time.

You walk away with:

✅ A full gallery of ready-to-use, on-brand images
✅ Consistent images that matches your website, voice, and seasonal goals
✅ Visuals that help you attract (and convert!) the clients you actually want to take on!

No more Googling “post ideas” or spending hours scrolling Ig for ideas (and inevitable get distracted along the way) or hoping inspiration strikes. With a well-thought-out and executed branding session, you’ve got an entire content strategy library in your camera roll!

Real-World Examples (That Aren’t Just Headshots)

Sure, me telling you this is great.  But let's get into some tactile examples of what these sessions might look like:.

Let’s say you’re:

  • A maple syrup maker in Stowe — We’d capture your tapping process, bottling setup, and cozy lifestyle shots of the product being poured on pancakes (maybe in an A-Frame surrounded by buffalo plaid??)

  • A therapist in Burlington — You might need relaxed, approachable portraits in your space, flatlays of your journals and books, cozy blankets, and coffee mugs for social posts.

  • A yoga teacher in Richmond — We’d get soft morning light, movement images, and even promo shots for upcoming workshops or retreats.

It’s not about pretending. It’s about showing the real you, beautifully and intentionally. It's about taking the time and making the investment to tell your story the way it's mean to be told.  I don't know about you, but authenticity speaks volumes because it makes you've gotten vulnerable.
